BeBox Links

Welcome to the BeBox Zone collection of BeBox, BeOS, and Be related links. The links are hand checked and reviewed, and specifically broken up into the following categories:

Hardware Links

Hardware links cover any sites with BeBox hardware information. This also extends to sites related to BeBox hardware (such as sites detailing Blinkenlights projects and covering PowerPC issues)

  • GeekLights for an Intel based BeOS Box. Unfortunately, this page doesn't seem to have been updated since 1999, but it has contact details for the author, and seems like an interesting enough project to gain a place here on my links page, despite the lack of recent updates ...
  • A more active project very similar to the Geeklights project is Andreas Känner's PulseBox project. This project has recently been rekindled, and has all the schematics and parts lists for building your own blinken lights (if you don't have a BeBox). The software and hardware plans were licensed by Fujitsu-Siemens and were used in their 1998 Silver-Line-PCs, so you can guarantee that what's on offer is stable and robust :-)
  • IBM's PowerPC Open Platform reference design site offers design and component specifications for a PowerPC-based, ATX form-factor motherboard, designed by IBM. It is designed to assist developers who are interested in offering PowerPC based Linux systems (and hopefully BeOS systems!) for the thin server or appliance market.
  • The AmigaOne site has details about a single CPU PPC G3 and G4 based systems (no Multi-Processor systems seem likely from this project, as it's Amiga based).
  • The PowerPC Wikipedia entry offers information about current and future PPC chips, and details about various PowerPC-based systems.
  • Frizbe used to offer compatibility information for BeOS hardware, coverting both PowerPC and Intel based hardware. Since Frizbe's disappearance, the hardware matrix has been hosted at BeDrivers.
  • The BeBox Forums have a number of BeBox hardware related forums, containing questions, answers and discussions about compatible hardware, hardware problems and related issues.

OS for BeBox Links

These links all cover the information about running various operating systems on a BeBox.

  • For details about the various operating systems that can run on your BeBox, click on through to the Operating Systems section of The BeBox Zone.
  • Plan9 port for the BeBox. This project seems largely to have stalled, with the original author having moved onto work on Inferno, but it remains a very interesting concept. You can also read a description of the work done to date, and of Plan9 itself.
  • NetBSD port for the BeBox. Also see the NetBSD port for BeBox mailing list. Much more info and detail about NetBSD BeBox, although it looks like things have stalled a bit lately.
  • SheepShaver for BeOS PPC (and soon for LinuxPPC) allows the MacOS to be run natively on under BeOS PPC (on a BeBox for example).
  • Linux for BeBox by William Sowerbutts. This site contains info about a port of Linux to the BeBox. For those interested in a Linux port to the BeBox, there is also a Be-Linux mailing list, which I have been subscribed to for the past year or so. Not much has happened on it recently though. Note that the original copy of this site has been off-the-air since December 2002. I'm still waiting to hear from Will whether it's a temporary or permanent removal ...
  • Jonathan's Guide to installing LinuxPPC on a BeBox.
  • BeWine is the page for the porting of WINE to BeOS. (WINE being another typically UNIXish recursive acronym standing for Wine Is Not an Emulator)
  • WinBe is another effort to have a WINE like emulator for BeOS.
  • The BeBox Forums have a number of forums with questions, answers and discussion about running both BeOS and Other Operating Systems (such as LinuxPPC, NetBSD, Plan9, MacOS and others) on a BeBox.
  • HaikuOS will hopefully be portable enough for someone to make it run on the BeBox. There's certainly been some interest in a PowerPC port, so keep your fingers crossed!
  • YellowTab supposedly paid for rights to use the BeOS source code, and claims to be developing a new extension of the (true) BeOS in the form of Zeta. Again, there is some slim chance Zeta may one day run on the PowerPC platform. Magnussoft has also recently launched their own Zeta-OS site
  • BlueEyedOS is another BeOS inspired operating system, running on top of a Linux kernel. The BlueEyedOS APIs are essentially the BeOS APIs with some improvements.

BeOS Software

These links contain software essential for any BeOS user.

  • BeBits is the most comprehensive source of BeOS software.
  • Tucows maintains its own collection of BeOS software (although the collection has recently been moved to the 'Classic OS' section).
  • OpenTracker offers free, open-source versions of Tracker and Deskbar, the two applications that power the BeOS desktop.
  • BeBits hosts an old mirror of the BeWare ftp repository. Be aware that pretty much all of this software is waaay out of date, and was written for relatively old versions of BeOS. Still a useful resource if you're looking for code or ideas though.
  • Apache for BeOS pages detailing information about the port of the Apache webserver to BeOS.
  • BeZilla.org is the centre of action for the BeOS port of Mozilla/Firefox. Got some programming skills? Muck in and help! :-)
  • BeDrivers.com is a website dedicated to BeOS drivers (though unfortunately, mostly of the Intel variety).
  • Desktopian.org's BeOS section offers a nicely organised collection of links to essential BeOS software.

BeOS Development

Interested in writing your own software or assisting other developers in writing theirs? If so, these are the links to checkout.

  • BeUnited has relaunched itself (again) as the standards portal for open source BeOS initiatives. It's great to see some people trying to keep the community from fragmenting!
  • The Be{Dev,Code}Talk FAQ a list of "Frequently Asked Questions" for the BeDevTalk and BeCodeTalk mailing lists.
  • Be Games has recently headed in a new direction, and begun focusing on providing gaming projects (rather than gaming news).
  • Reveng is a disassembler for BeOS, based on the GNU objdump utility.

Be News

These are the places to go to discover the latest news, views and rumours in the Be community.

  • Be Inc.. The company that inspired this entire site. The creators of the BeBox, BeOS, BeIA. All round good guys. Unfortunately, they've moved on to beincorporated.com and there's nothing worthwhile left at be.com.
  • Be Groovy is an excellent source of Be Information and News. BeGroovy also hosts the lively BeGroovy Forums.
  • The Haiku News is probably the most active BeOS/Haiku News site on the planet.
  • Be Forever has been around, well, seemingly forever! It used to offer an alternative news source, but now has been reduced to a listing of BeOS resources.
  • LeBuzz is the authority on anything and everything on the BeOS audio scene.
  • BeOS Online is a great looking German BeOS news and community information site.
  • OSNews is not strictly a Be news site, though it does run more than its fair share of BeOS related articles. You'll find a healthy mix of info about *nix, the BSDs, the MacOS, QNX and others amongst the Be news.
  • BeOSNews provides the latest news on all things BeOS related.
  • IsComputerOn offers news related to the BeOS and the BeOS community.

Be Community

Trying to find a BeOS user group? Interested in the history and gossip of the Be community? Just want to see where we BeOS users and BeBox fanatics hang out? Checkout these sites.

  • The Haiku Podcast offers interviews and news relevant to the Haiku OS and the BeOS.
  • BeDope is the site for satirical commentary (and the spreading of highly exaggerated rumours) about Be and the Be community. It might take you a couple of articles to get used to the style, but it is well worth your time and effort. Unfortunately, in February 2001, BeDope announced it's closure. Mike has been kind enough to leave the site up for people to look over and have a chuckle.
  • BeDope may have retired, but that just made way for BeDoper, a new satirical commentary site for BeOS fans (even if perhaps more acidic than the original BeDope).
  • The BeOS Tip Server offers hints and tips about using, installing and configuring BeOS.
  • Be Groovy is an not only an excellent source of Be Information and News; BeGroovy also hosts the lively BeGroovy Forums.
  • The Greenboard provides a comprehensive set of Be Users forum. There are discussion forums for a range of Be-related topics, and a nicely designed threaded discussion listing can be perused for each forum.
  • BeOSRADIO is an Internet radio station featuring "all-original music" created by BeOS enthusiasts and their friends, plus hourly BeOS news, BeOS tips and tricks, and weekly "BeOS People" interviews.
  • The Unofficial JLG blog is a completely unofficial weblog for JLG. Offers regularly updated news and information about JLG.
  • Jean-Marc Ouvré has a page with a bunch of great pictures of people from the early days of Be Inc. Head over to his website for a look.
  • Former Be Inc webmaster, Michael Alderete, writes a regular blog. If you look back through old entries, you'll find details about the bundle of BeBoxen he bought from the Be Inc auction.
  • The BeBits Wiki is a community maintained resource about all things related to Be Inc, the BeOS, the BeBox and the Be Community.
  • ubix.org is a French BeOS information and advocacy site, which also hosts the fr.comp.sys.be FAQ.
  • BeGeistert is a website with all the information about past and upcoming BeGeistert meetings. Don't know what BeGeistert is? Then head over to the site and find out!
