BeBox Operating Systems

If you're interested in how Operating Systems interact with the BeBox, then a good place to start is to read Bob Herold's From Power Up to the Browser and OS Writer's Cookbook articles.

Once you've got your head around that, head on over to the Tech Info section of The BeBox Zone for all the technical manuals, kernel code snippets, and discussion about BeBox hardware you could ever want.

Over the years, a number of Operating Systems have been known to run on the BeBox. Below you'll find information about all the operating systems that are known to have run on a BeBox.

BeOS

The primary operating system (which was written specifically for the BeBox), is the BeOS. The BeOS was developed from scratch by Be Inc over a period of approximately 10 years.

Plan 9

Plan 9 is an advanced multi-user Open Source operating system designed with at Bell Labs (the home of UNIX). It runs on multiple hardware platforms and is highly suited to building large distributed systems.

Linux

Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.

NetBSD

NetBSD is a free, secure, and highly portable UNIX-like operating system. Its clean design and advanced features make it excellent in both production and research environments, and it is user-supported with complete source. NetBSD/bebox is the port of NetBSD to the BeBox.

MacOS

SheepShaver provides a MacOS runtime environment for BeOS. It is not itself an operating system, but runs an unmodified MacOS 7.x/8.x under control of the BeOS without any kind of emulation.
